1. Why did Swami Haridas say Tansen was ‘talented’ ?
Answer – Swami Haridas was once traveling in the forest with his disciples. Tansen hiding behind a tree scared them by roaring like a lion. From this Swami Haridas said that Tansen was a genius.

2. Why did Akbar ask Tansen to join his court ?
Answer – Tansen learned music from Swami Haridas for eleven years. He himself became a famous singer. Sometimes he used to sing in front of Emperor Akbar. Akbar was so impressed that he asked Tansen to join his court in 1556.

3. How do we know that Akbar was fond of Tansen? Give two reasons.
Answer – Tansen was very dear to Akbar. Akbar used to call Tansen to sing at any time of the day or night. Often he used to go to Tansen’s house to hear him practice. He also gave them many gifts.

4. What did the other courtiers feel about Tansen ?
Answer – The Other courtiers were jealous of Tansen. He declared that he would not rest until Tansen was destroyed.

5. (i) What happens if Raga Deepak is sung properly ?
(ii) Why did Tansen’s enemies want him to sing the Raga ?

Answer – (i) If Raga Deepak is sung properly, it heats the air so much that the singer is burnt to ashes.

(ii) Tansen’s enemies wanted him to sing Raga Deepak as they knew he was a good singer and would die if he sang it.

6. Why did Tansen agree to sing Raga Deepak ?
Answer – Tansen agreed to sing Raga Deepak as he could not disobey the king.

7. (i) What steps did he take to save himself ?
(ii) Did his plan work? How ?
Answer – (i) Tansen had a premonition that if someone sang Raga Megh at the same time as he was singing Raga Deepak, it would rain and he would not burn. He taught his daughter Saraswati and her friend Roopvati to sing Raag Megh. He told them to start singing when the lamps start burning.

(ii) Yes, his plan worked. As he continued to sing Raga Deepak, the leaves on the trees dried up and fell. The birds died due to the heat and the water in the rivers started boiling. Flames rose from nowhere and lit the lamps. Once, Saraswati and Rupvati started singing Raag Megh. The sky became cloudy and it started raining. As a result Tansen’s life was saved.
