Question 3. Answer the following questions in about 120 words.
(i) Explain land use pattern in India and why has the land under forest not increased much since 1960-61? Answer – The utilization of land resources in India is divided into various parts. Land under forests, arable land, pasture land and barren land. The barren land consists of hilly rocks, dry and desert land. Land used for non-agricultural purposes includes settlements, roads, railway lines, industries, etc. As per the present data, about 54% of the land in India is arable, 22.2% is under forest and 3.45% is available for grazing. Since 1960-61, there has not been a significant increase in the area under forests, since the post-independence period, mainly after the Green Revolution, most of the land has been used for agriculture, and for the development of infrastructure facilities that are responsible for the clearance of forest cover. Apart from this, industrialization and urbanization are also responsible for deforestation. Thus, since 1960-61, there has been only 4% expansion of land under forests. |
