Notes

Where did People Live?

• People Lived ALong The Banks of the river.
• Rearing animals also began.
• Some of the the people who lived here were skilled hunter-gatherers and they live near forests.
• People lived as Settled Agriculturalist.

Settlement near rivers

• About 4700 years ago, some of the earliest cities flourished on banks of River Indus.
• Later, about 2500 years ago, cities developed on the banks of ganga.
• Area south of the Ganga was known as Magadha.
• Its ruler were very powerful and set up a large kingdom.
(What, Where, How and When?) You Know About These

Narmada River: Flows mainly in MP

• Along its bank.
• For several hundred thousand years.
• They were skilled gatherers.
• Had very vast knowledge of the plants growing around them.
• Collected fruits, roots & other forest produce.
• Also hunted animals.

Sulaiman & Ulaiman & Kirthar Hills:

• Lies to the Northwest of India.
• Areas where women & men first began to grow crops such as WHEAT & BARLEY about 8000 years ago.
Began rearing animals like sheep, Goat, Cattle etc.

Garo Hills & Vindhyas:

• Among the places where rice was first grown → North of Vindhyas.
• Agriculture Development → Garo Hills.

Indus & Its Tributaries:

• About 4700 years ago, some of the earliest cities flourished on their banks.

Ganga: South of Ganga – Area- Magadh. (Now in Bihar) and very Powerful & larger kingdom”

People Traveled :

(i) Obstacles = Himalayas, Deserts, Seas.
(ii) Reasons = in search of livelihood, to escape disasters, Adventure and Led to Sharing of Ideas.
Names of the Land: Two words often used for our country are India and Bharat.

India :

• India Comes from word Indus and Sindhu in Sanskrit.
• Iranians and Greeks were familiar with the Indus, called it the Hindos or the Indos.
• Land to the east of the river was called India.

Bharat :

• The name Bharat is mentioned in the Rigveda [3500 years ago].
• It was used for a group of people who lived in the North-west.
Finding Out About The Past

Several ways:

(i) Through Manuscripts.
(ii) Through Inscriptions.
Manuscripts:

• Books written long ago. They are hand written [Manuscripts, this comes from the latin word ‘Manu’ meaning hand].
• They were usually written on palm leaf or on the specially prepared bark of a tree know as birch, which grows in Himalayas.
• Many manuscripts were eaten away by insects – Destroyed But many were preserved in temples and monasteries.
• Many of these manuscripts were written in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Tamil.
• Another source of History are Inscriptions.
• Writing engraved on hard surfaces such as stone or metal.

Manuscripts were written on variety of subjects:

• Religious beliefs and practices.
• The lives of kings.
• Medicine and science.
• Epics, poems and plays.

why do they write Manuscripts?

• Orders of kings.
• Life of the people [king, queen and others]
• Records of victories in battle.
Inscriptions:

• Writings on relatively hard surfaces such as stone or metal.
• Kings got their orders inscribed so that people could see, read & obey them.
• Kings often kept records of battle [ in which they turned victorious]
Archaeologist

• A person who studies the people & what in the past by the things they left behind.
• Archaeologist they Study the remains of buildings (stone, brick), paintings, Sculpture, tools, omaments, weapons.
• They also carry excavations. (Digging the surface of Earth).
• Archaeologist they were study bones of animals, birds, fish, Plants Remains.
What do dates mean?

• Years are generally assigned to the birth of Jesus Christ
BC [Before christ] = Birth of Jesus Christ = AD [Anno Domini]

(i) AD – Anno Domini. Also called as CE. (Common Era).
(ii) BC – Before Christ. Also called as BCE. (Before Common Era).

Ans – Magadha was famous because its meters were very powerful who established a big kingdom.

Ans – Religious teachers moved from one place to another to offer instruction and advice to the people who met on the way.
