Outcomes of Democracy
Notes
How do we assess democracy’s outcomes Democracy is a better form of government because • It promotes equality among citizens. • It enhances the dignity of the individual. • It improves the quality of decision-making. • It provides a method to resolve conflicts. • It allows room to correct mistakes.. |
Is the democratic government efficient? • Non-democratic rulers do not have to bother about deliberation in assemblies or worry about majorities and public opinion. • A democratic government will take more time to follow procedures before arriving at a decision. Because it has followed procedures, its decisions may be both more acceptable to the people and more effective. |
Accountable • A citizen who wants to know if a decision was taken through the correct procedures can find this out. This is known as transparency. |
Responsive – a government is attentive to the needs and expectation of the people is called responsive government |
Legitimate Government • In democracy, governments are elected through a regular, free and fair elections. • Laws are made following proper procedures, after much discussion with the representatives of the people. • If people feel that government has done something which goes against the Constitution, people can challenge it in the Judiciary. |
Economic growth and development • Between 1950 and 2000, dictatorships have slightly higher rate of economic growth. • Economic growth depends on various factors: Size of the population of a country Global situation Co-operation from other countries Economic policies adopted by the country • However, the difference in the rates of economic development between less developed countries with dictatorships and democracies is negligible. |
dignity and freedom of the citizens. 1. Democracy ensures that conflicts that may emerge between people over feelings of alienation or inequality are minimised, and everyone has access to sociopolitical and economic equality. 2. Democracy is built on the fervour for respect and freedom. Everyone accepts this idea. 3. Because men predominate in most societies, women do not have equal opportunities. Equal respect and treatment for women have been accepted in democracies. 4. Democracies, particularly in diverse nations like India, have acknowledged the claims of the socially backward and disadvantaged and have given them equal status and opportunity. |
accommodation of social diversity. Accommodation of social diversity in democracy helps the citizens to lead a peaceful and a harmonious life. This happens when various types of social divisions are accommodated. India and Belgium are the countries that are examples of accommodation of social diversity. |
reduce inequality and poverty 1. Democracy gives equal rights to the people; it does not discriminate on the basis of sex, religion, color, caste etc. 2. Democracy promotes the redistributive mechanism for conveying financial benefits on the grounds of the necessity of any section of the community, this directs to a more equal division of privileges to under privilege which overcomes poverty. 3. Democracy provides a proper atmosphere for organizational activism which commences to the same opportunity to increase the interests of impoverished people. 4. In order to reduce poverty and inequality democracies made efforts to promote a more transparent form of government and thus provide people with rights such as Right to Information etc. 5. Governments can intervene to promote equity, and reduce inequality and poverty, through the tax and benefits system. This means employing a progressive tax and benefits system which takes proportionately more tax from those on higher levels of income, and redistributes welfare benefits to those on lower incomes. |
