Question 3. Why did William Jones feel the need to study Indian history, philosophy and law?

Ans –

1. William Jones shared a deep respect for ancient cultures, both of India and the West.

2. He felt that study of Indian history, philosophy and law would not only help the British learn from Indian culture, but it would also help Indians rediscover their own heritage, and understand the lost glories of their past.

3. In this process, the British would become the guardians of Indian culture as well as its masters. William Jones believed that only a new study of the legal texts could form the basis of future development in India.
Question 4. Why did James Mill and Thomas Macaulay think that European education was essential in India?

Ans – James Mill and Thomas Babington Macaulay thought that European education was essential for India because they were of the opinion that the knowledge of the East was unscientific, illogical and irrational.  They contended that the western education was scientific and logical.
Question 5. Why did Mahatma Gandhi want to teach children handicrafts?

Ans – People had to work with their hands, learn a craft, and know how different things operated. This would develop their mind and their capacity to understand. Thus, Gandhiji wanted to teach children handicraft.

Question 6. Why did Mahatma Gandhi think that English education had enslaved Indians?

Ans – Mahatma Gandhi thought that English education had enslaved Indians because colonial education created a sense of inferiority in the minds of Indians. It made them to see western civilisation as superior and destroyed the pride they had in their own culture.

Question 7. Find out from your grandparents about what they studied in school.

Ans – My grandparents studied English, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and the local language. There were lot of out-door activities and life-skills learning too. Weaving, pottery making, type-writing and short-hand were some of the skills they learned from school.
